The 30-Minute Monthly Money Review: A Simple Checklist

Use this practical monthly money checklist to review spending, catch problems, and make the next month easier to manage.

A monthly money review creates a regular moment to notice problems before they become expensive. It is not about judging every purchase. It is about knowing what changed and choosing the next action.

Download the monthly money review checklist to track completion and notes in a spreadsheet.

Minutes 0–5: Gather the Numbers

Open your bank and credit card statements for the month. Record the ending balances and confirm that all expected accounts are included.

For easier analysis, convert statement PDFs to CSV and combine the transactions in one spreadsheet. Keep personal and business accounts separated.

Minutes 5–10: Review Unfamiliar Transactions

Scan merchant descriptions and mark anything you do not recognize. Check the date, amount, receipt, and other account holders before deciding that a charge is fraudulent. Contact the financial institution promptly about transactions you still do not recognize.

Also look for duplicate charges, unexpected fees, and refunds that never arrived.

Minutes 10–15: Compare Spending With the Plan

Total the main categories and compare them with your monthly budget. Focus on the largest differences instead of investigating every small purchase.

Ask three questions:

  1. Was the budget target unrealistic?
  2. Was this an unusual month?
  3. Is there a habit or bill that needs attention?

If you do not have a plan yet, start with a budget built from bank statements.

Minutes 15–20: Check Recurring Charges

Look for subscriptions, memberships, and software renewals. Confirm that each one is still useful and that its price matches your expectation. Follow the subscription audit process for a deeper review.

Minutes 20–25: Update Savings and Debt Progress

Record contributions to savings and payments toward debt. Compare the current balance with last month and note the direction of change.

Do not make investment, debt, or savings decisions from a single generic rule. Consider your circumstances and seek a qualified professional when needed.

Minutes 25–30: Choose Three Actions

Finish with no more than three concrete actions. Examples include canceling an unused subscription, moving money for an annual bill, or lowering one flexible category next month.

Schedule the next review immediately. A short review completed consistently is more valuable than a perfect system abandoned after one month.
